Health Supervisor Information

Full information on the CA Code of Regluations for Camps

Note to ACA Accredited Camps

According to California Code of Regulations Title 17 Subchapter 6. Organized Camps section: 30750(c) There shall be a full-time adult Health Supervisor charged with health supervision at the camp when campers are present.

Section 30700(f) defines: “Health Supervisor” means a person who is either:
  • A physician
  • A registered nurse
  • A licensed vocational nurse who is licensed pursuant to Division 2 of the Business and Professions Code
  • or a person who is trained in accordance with section 1596.866 of the Health and Safety Code.

CA Health and Safety Code 1596.866 states that this person:
shall have at least 15 hours of health and safety training that shall include:
(A) Pediatric first aid.
(B) Pediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
(C) A preventative health practices course or courses that include instruction in the recognition, management, and prevention of infectious diseases, including immunizations, and prevention of childhood injuries.

To meet 1596.866(C) the American Red Cross has designed the CA Child Care Course. This is a 15 hour course and successful participants will receive the following certifications:

  • Preventative Health & Safety: No Expiration
  • CPR-Adult, Child & Infant: 1 year
  • Pediatric First Aid:  2 years

Course delivery may vary between ARC Chapters, some offer one 15-hour 2-day course and others may offer the course in 2 modules (1.CPR-Adult, Child, & Infant and Pediatric First Aid - 8 hours; 2. Preventative Health & Safety - 7 hours). In order to meet the CA requirement, you must receive training that totals 15 hours and contains both Module I & II.

NOTE: Some American Red Cross Chapters offer the “California Child Care Preventative Health & Safety” Course as one,
two-day course, totaling 15 hours. Others will offer Module I, Preventative Health and Safety (totaling 7 hours) and Module II, Community CPR and Pediatric First Aid (totaling 8 hours) as individual courses.

Note to CA ACA Accredited Camps
In addition to meeting the CA Health Supervisor requiurements Accredited camps must continue to meet Mandatory Standard HW-1 (check for equivalent certifications www.acacamps.org/accreditation/firstaidcpr.php) and Standard HW-11 (not a mandatory standard). For some camps additional certifications may be required to meet CA regulations. Contact the EMSA Child Care Unit for further questions
